What makes research at Tufts different?

Research is at the heart of the engineering program at Tufts. The research community in the Tufts School of Engineering demonstrates a passion for innovation through integration of diverse ideas within a vibrant interdisciplinary environment. State-of-the-art laboratory facilities, world-renowned faculty members, and a highly collaborative environment result in rigorous and cutting-edge programs with the added flexibility for interdisciplinary initiatives afforded by the relatively small size coupled with the significant academic diversity of Tufts University.

The SOE Office of Research is dedicated to create supportive environment and infrastructure to enhance research productivity and active scholarship. It initiates, supports and sustains programs and activities to increase faculty productivity and active engagement through collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

<h4>Environmental Engineering</h4>

<p>Research has begun for the Community Assessment of Freeway Exposure and Health study sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. A research team led by Tufts' Doug Brugge and <a title="" href="http://engineering.tufts.edu/cee/people/durant/index.asp" target="_blank">John Durant</a>, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will <a title="" href="http://thesomervillenews.com/main.asp?SectionID=2&SubSectionID=2&ArticleID=1591&TM=57674.23" target="_blank">monitor air quality</a>  in and around the Somerville, Mass. area.</p>

<h4>Karen Panetta named 2008 IEEE fellow </h4>

<p>Associate professor Karen Panetta was named a 2008 IEEE fellow "for leadership in engineering education and curriculum development to attract, retain, and advance women in engineering."</p>

<h4>Predicting Cholera Outbreaks</h4>

<p>Researchers, including Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor, <a href="http://engineering.tufts.edu/cee/people/islam/index.asp">Shafiqul Islam</a> have proposed a link between cholera and fluctuating water levels in Bangladesh's three principal rivers - the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna. <h4>Research Grant Update</h4>

<p>Professor and Chair, <a title="" href="http://engineering.tufts.edu/cee/people/pennell/index.asp" target="_blank">Kurt Pennell</a>, Dean Linda Abriola, and former post doctoral researcher, Yusong Li, have been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to study <a title="" href="http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward.do?AwardNumber=0854136" target="_blank">fate and transport of metal-based nanoparticles</a> in the subsurface.</p>

<h4>Shaky Footing</h4>

Now Tufts civil and environmental engineers Professor <a href="http://engineering.tufts.edu/cee/people/vogel/index.asp">Richard Vogel</a> and CEE doctoral student, Brian Thomas, are looking to shore them up.

<h4>Water Resources Award</h4>

<p>The <a href="http://content.asce.org/files/pdf/AwardwinnersupdatefortheWeb112008.pdf" target="_blank">ASCE's 2009 Julian Hinds Award</a> was presented to Professor <a href="people/vogel/index.asp">Richard Vogel</a> for his advancement of the practice and science of water resource planning and management through his hydrologic research, his extension of the results of hydrologic research to problems of other disciplines, his participation in the affairs of professional societies, notably the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Geophysical Union, and his encouragement of students to pursue engineering careers.</p>
