School of Engineering Vision

The Tufts University School of Engineering is uniquely positioned to educate the technological leaders of tomorrow. We offer a rigorous engineering education in an environment characterized by the best blending of a liberal arts college atmosphere with the intellectual and technological resources of a world-class research university. Our goals are to educate engineers committed to the innovative and ethical application of technology in the solution of societal problems, and to be a leader among peer institutions in targeted areas of interdisciplinary research and education that impact the well-being and sustainability of society.

<h4>Advanced Technology Laboratory</h4>

<p>Tufts will develop chemical robots so soft and squishy that they can squeeze into spaces as tiny as 1 centimeter, then morph into something 10 times larger -- and ultimately biodegrade.<br />

<h4>Curio House in D.C.</h4>

<p>Curio House is the roughly 800-square-foot home designed by students such as <a href="http://matttalkstufts.wordpress.com/">Matt Thoms</a>, engineering project leader, for the <a href="http://www.solardecathlon.org/">2009 Solar Decathlon</a>, a contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.<br />

<h4>Service Learning</h4>

<p>With a three-year, $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, Associate Professor Chris Swan is leading a team of students and faculty that is studying whether <a title="" href="http://tuftsjournal.tufts.edu/2009/04_1/briefs/01/" target="_blank">service learning attracts more women to engineering</a> and whether it can enhance engineering education overall.</p>

<h4>Spotlight - Faculty</h4>

<p><b>Maria Flytzani-Stephanopoulos</b> has been awarded the distinction of <a title="" href="http://engineering.tufts.edu/1181647322007/Engineering-Page-eng2w_1181647322330.html" target="_blank">AAAS Fellow</a>  for distinguished contributions to the field of catalysis, particularly for new insights in oxidation reactions on nanoscale metal oxides in fuel conversion and pollutant removal processes.</p>

As director, Professor Vogel will continue to expand interdisciplinary, water-related research and education efforts across Tufts’ schools in collaboration with the  <a href="http://environment.tufts.edu/">Tufts Institute of the Environment</a> (TIE). As of Sept. 1, Professor Vogel was also named director of the water-related activities at TIE.

<p><strong>David Kaplan</strong>, Biomedical Engineering professor and chair, <strong>Michael Levin</strong>, Professor of Biology, and biomedical engineering doctoral student, <strong>Sarah Sundelacruz</strong>, show that <a title="" href="http://engineering.tufts.edu/1181647322330/Engineering-Page-eng2w_1227607226157.html" target="_blank">changes in membrane voltage</a> control timing of differentiation in adult stem cells.</p>

The award will be presented at <a title="" href="http://www.aiche.org/SBE/Events/Annual.aspx" target="_blank">AIChE Annual Meeting</a>, November 16-21.<br />

This award will be presented at the annual AEG meeting Sept. 15-20, 2008.</p>

<h4>Wind Power Arising </h4>

<p>Professsor Lew Edgers and four other faculty members from the CEE department have received a grant from the Peter and Denise Wittich Family Fund for Alternative Energy Research to develop a methodology for <a title="" href="http://tuftsjournal.tufts.edu/2009/05_1/features/01/" target="_blank">siting offshore wind farms</a> to maximize their energy output while minimizing construction and operating costs.</p>

<p>Grad student Mike Horn combines computer science and child development to help <a title="" href="http://tuftsjournal.tufts.edu/2008/10/features/01/" target="_blank">kids learn the basics of programming</a> by employing robots—and lots of fun.</p>
