SOE Awards to Enhance Collaborative Research

We are pleased to announce three SOE awards in response to our request for proposals to enhance collaborative research. This category of proposals is envisioned to encourage and support research groups to form and self-organize for pursuing a targeted area of research. These three proposals truly embrace the idea of enhancing collaborative research and chance interactions both within and outside SOE. Here is a brief description of the three proposals that will be funded during the 2007-08 academic year.

  1. Interdisciplinary Seminar Series on Computational Biology (Blumer, Cowen, Kaplan, and Slonim from SOE; Freudenreich and Fuhrman from Biology and Widmer from Vet School) is intended to create SOE as the hub for all computational biology related research and scholarship at Tufts.
  2. Develop a Systems Faculty Collaborative (Georgakis, Vogel, Hopwood, Wlezien, and Levine) to bring together groups from disparate disciplines to share diverse novel ideas and common methodologies around engineering systems.
  3. Schlumberger-Tufts Computational and Applied Math Seminar Series (Ramsburg, Miller, Fantini, and Abriola from SOE; Kilmer and Garven from A&S) will form the basis for a longer-term research relationship between Tufts and Schlumberger and create an opportunity to showcase the high quality ongoing research on mathematical imaging at Tufts.

The seminar series, lectures, and workshops associated with the above programs will be coordinated to ensure maximum participation of students and faculty from within and outside SOE. In total, there will be approximately 23 seminars and lectures spread over the 2007-08 academic year. These will be coordinated such that they do not conflict and advertised widely via e-mail, posters and web to enhance participation and increase chance interactions.
