Past Events: 2010 BME Retreat
The 2010 BME retreat took place at Cape Cod, Mass., September 24-25. More than 80 students, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students attended. Fun activities at the conference site and nearby beach were held during the day. A banquet dinner was held to kick-off the evening science symposium of posters and talks given by students, fellows, and professors.
Kathy Ye and Josh Resnikoff from Prof. Black's lab presented for the Black Lab at the BME retreat in September. Kathy presented the development of her mechanical distention bioreactor and the preliminary results she had collected on the effects of cyclic distension on engineered myocardial tissue. Josh presented his work on the use of perfusion decellularized ECM as a potential tool for aiding in the differentiation of stem cells to cardiac muscle cells.
Michele Pierro from Prof. Fantini's group presented his work, done in collaboration with Feng Zheng, on phase-sensitive detection of oscillatory concentrations of oxy-hemoglobin and deoxy-hemoglobin in cerebral tissue. In particular, he discussed its potential role in the study of networks of functional connectivity in the brain.
Doug MacDonald, who is an MS student in Prof. Georgakoudi's group, presented a new way he developed to analyze endogenous fluorescence images acquired from epithelial cells to characterize changes in the mitochondrial subcellular organization associated with E7 expression (an oncoprotein), normal and abnormal mitoses. The work could ultimately lead to improved ways of detected pre-cancerous changes.
Zachary Schiller, PhD candidate in Prof. Kuo's group, presented his research focused on controlling adipogenic differentiation of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells as a function of cytoskeletal structure and oxygen tension. Successful outcomes will lead to a greater understanding of adipose tissue expansion in vivo, and provide insight into potential mechanisms of mesenchymal stem cell differentiation.
Prof. Cronin-Golomb gave a talk on optical tweezers and azo-silk.
