After an outstanding
performance at the Regional competition at WPI
on February 22nd,
2003, we placed third (behind UVM
and UConn) due to an alleged
dimensional penalty. However, after appealing the judges’ decision based on
their use of inappropriate measuring tools in assigning the penalty, we
were granted the chance to compete at the National competition.
At the National
competition at San Diego State University
on May 23-24, we were disqualified due to failure of the lateral load test
(which, strangely enough, had passed at Regionals and we hadn’t thought to
recheck).
The University of Michigan won the National
competition with a construction time of 1.7 minutes, a weight of 101.5 lbs,
and an aggregate deflection of 0.598 inches.
Despite our seeming bad
luck, a good time was had by all in San
Diego.
