Steel Bridge – 2001-02 Season

We placed third at the New England Regional Steel Bridge competition at the University of Connecticut on February 17th, 2002. The first and second place winners were the University of Vermont (UVM) and UConn, respectively.

The other schools present were Northeastern, UMass Amherst, and WPI.

Unfortunately, only the top two teams went on to Nationals in June.

We assembled our bridge in 2:09, second only to Northeastern, who completed their bridge in 1:56. Northeastern was later disqualified due to a dimensional error. Our bridge deflected about 0.5 inches at mid-span, a little more than we had expected but still very reasonable. The main factor going against us was the weight of our bridge. In past years, this may not have been an issue, but the level of competition this year was high and thus every factor counted.

Photos of the regional competition are posted in Photos.
