The Tzanakakis lab receives NSF grant for advanced biomanufacturing of insulin-producing cells

insulin-producing beta-cells The loss of insulin-producing beta-cells in the pancreas due to autoimmunity (type 1) or insulin resistance (type 2) is central to diabetes. Administration of exogenous insulin is the main treatment for patients with diabetes and currently there is no cure for the disease.

In this NSF-supported project, the Tzanakakis (Tufts) and Hebrok (UCSF) laboratories will work collaboratively to engineer scalable bioprocesses for the efficient and reproducible manufacturing of functional cells suitable for diabetes cellular therapies.
