Research Interests, Areas, or
Ongoing Projects:
- Membrane bioseparations, biocatalysis, (bio)pharmaceutical
technologies.
- Functional membranes as platforms for advanced
chemical processing – e.g., membrane reactors,
bioaffinity membranes, process intensification, and
high-throughput DNA sequencing.
- "Appropriate" chemical technology.
Short Bio: Dr. Matson
worked in the areas of facilitated transport membranes and
polymer processing at GE’s Research and Development Center
from 1973 to 1982, followed by two years as director of
research for contract R&D firm Bend Research Inc. In 1984,
Matson co-founded Sepracor Inc. to commercialize his Ph.D.
research on enzyme membrane reactors capable of resolving
racemic pharmaceuticals into their pure-component isomers.
Taken public in 1991, the company now boasts product sales
in excess of $1 billion/yr based on a drug portfolio that
includes Lunesta® for insomnia, Xopenex® for asthma, Brovana®
for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and Allegra® and
Clarinex® (out-licensed drugs) for seasonal allergies. After
holding a variety of management and consulting positions at
Sepracor and its technology spin-offs, Matson left in 2002
to pursue interests in the academic and non-profit sectors.
In 2004 he founded not-for-profit
ConTechs Associates Inc.
with the aim of teaming up chemical engineering volunteers
from the U.S. with engineering students and their professors
in developing countries (notably, Bolivia) to tackle societally significant chemical engineering challenges. In
2008, following two years on the faculty of Worcester
Polytechnic Institute as its Manning Professor of Chemical
Engineering, Matson joined Tufts as Professor of the
Practice in its Department of Chemical and Biological
Engineering.
