Awesome Arch

Powerpoint Presentation | Meet the team

The Exhibit

The exhibit consists of seven wooden blocks which can be put together to form an arch bridge. The bridge is large enough for a child to walk over after he/she assembles it.

The Design Process

After the group brainstormed and decided on the general topic of bridges, they learned about various types of bridges, such as suspension, arch, cable stay, draw bridge, and trusses. The girls made various protypes from paper and wood of each type of bridge before deciding on the arch bridge.

Making an arch bridge exhibit had some challenges. How can we make sure that children can assemble the bridge? This was solved by putting numbers on the blocks so that the children knew how the blocks fit together. Also, an additional block was made to fit under the bridge for support during assembly so that one person can assemble the bridge. The girls also had to make sure that the exhibit was safe for children. Their design has a handrail that the children can use while walking over the bridge, and also has anti-slip tapes on the blocks to keep children safe on their feet.
