Fracture Mechanics, Micromechanics of Materials
Mark Kachanov conducts research in micromechanics of materials, focusing on relations between material microstructure and the overall mechanical and conductive properties. Engineering applications include thermal barrier coating where the microstructure must be designed for the best combination of the conductive and elastic properties, and geological materials where the information obtained from acoustics must be correctly interpreted. He also works on multiple cracks problems, on the contact problem and on indentation of piezoelectric materials.
