Biography:

Kurt D. Pennell is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Bernard M. Gordon Senior Faculty Fellow in Environmental Engineering, at Tufts University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan. Prior to moving to Tufts in 2009, Pennell was a professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and held an adjunct faculty appointment in the Department of Neurology at the Emory University School of Medicine. His research focuses on soil and groundwater remediation technologies, engineered nanomaterial fate and transport, and the link between environmental exposure and human health.

Pennell has published over 150 referred journal articles and book chapters, and is a registered Professional Engineer (PE), Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE), and a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He has received numerous awards, including the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) Project of the Year in Environmental Restoration (2006, 2012), and served on the National Research Council (NRC) committee, which recently published “Alternatives for Managing the Nation’s Complex Contaminated Groundwater Sites.”
