Dean Jianmin Qu, Karol Family Professor and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, was recently selected as a Fellow of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). The grade of Fellow recognizes engineers who have achieved distinction and demonstrating outstanding proficiency in their profession.

Qu was named an IEEE Fellow for contributions to design and reliability analysis for microelectronic packaging. His research focuses on several areas of theoretical and applied mechanics, including thermomechanical reliability of microelectronic packaging, micromechanics of composites, interfacial fracture and adhesion, fatigue and creep damage in solder alloys, defects and transport in solids with applications to solid oxide fuel cells and batteries, and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of advanced engineering materials.

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The total number of new fellows selected in a year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the voting membership. See the full list of the newly elevated Class of 2018 Fellows.
