Biomedical technology is booming. Companies are seeking engineers who understand the medical uses of diagnostic imaging instrumentation, who have training in tissue engineering, or who are well-versed in biomaterials to design artificial joints. Students graduate from Tufts ready to advance in the ever-changing field of biomedical engineering.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers programs leading to Master of Science (MS) degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering (Biomaterials), and Biophotonics. Each program can be taken on a part-time or full-time basis.
MS in Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering combines intensive training in research methods, techniques, and practical skills with a solid science and engineering curriculum that provides breadth and depth in the field. A key aspect of biomedical engineering is its interdisciplinary nature; introductory courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics, and foundation/concentration courses build the basis for creating the synergy among these disciplines that is required in the practice of biomedical engineering.
MS in Bioengineering (Biomaterials)
Bioengineering (Biomaterials) involves the study of the interaction of biomaterials with their environment in the context of biomedical applications. Students will be encouraged to focus their studies on one of several bio-medically relevant topics, including tissue engineering, biological delivery, or the interaction of biomaterials with mammalian tissues.
MS in Biophotonics
Biophotonics is an interdisciplinary field that encompasses the design, engineering, and application of optical tools to study biological materials and processes. Research in this domain utilizes light-based technologies to improve diagnostics and therapeutics, as well as the application of advanced microscopes for quality control in manufacturing processes.
Dual Degree Master's Program (with Tufts Gordon Institute)
Develop your innovation, leadership and management skills and build your technical depth with the Dual Degree Master's Program. You’ll earn two degrees: an MS offered by the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and an MS in Engineering Management (MSEM), Innovation & Management (MSIM), or Technology Management & Leadership (MSTML).

Entrance requirements for the graduate program
Applicants to the graduate program are expected to have a degree at the level of Bachelor or Master in engineering or basic/applied/health sciences. Requirements include a basic knowledge of biology, math through ordinary differential equations, and some basic engineering courses (for example, fluid mechanics, properties of materials, thermodynamics, circuit theory). Students who do not meet all requirements may be admitted into the program pending the successful completion of courses aimed at the fulfillment of the requirements. Tufts will offer the opportunity for students accepted into the graduate program to attend courses specifically designed to provide appropriate background in areas such as biology, mathematics, circuit theory, chemical engineering, etc.
