Artificial Intelligence -- A Counterintelligence Perspective
This talk will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) from a counterintelligence perspective. Many commentators have opined that during the next several years AI has the potential to transform society in important ways. Among other things, AI could have substantial impacts on political systems, the economy, transportation, health care, how we fight wars, and intelligence collection and analysis. The talk will endeavor to provide some insights into what AI actually is and how it may impact us in the near future. It will also provide some background information on the counterintelligence field. We will then cover some of the primary counterintelligence concerns associated with AI from both a defensive and offensive perspective. The talk will address some of the key cybersecurity and surveillance implications of AI, as well as the topics of explainable AI (XAI) and ethical AI. The discussion will mainly be from a policy, legal and operational perspective rather than a technical one so it should be accessible to a wide audience.
Bio: Jim Baker is a Visiting Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution and a Visiting Fellow at the Lawfare Institute. He is also a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School. Jim was the General Counsel at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 2014-2018. He also held several high-ranking national security positions at the Department of Justice during the course of his career and is a former federal prosecutor. Jim has worked in the private sector at Verizon and Bridgewater Associates.
