Message from the Deans
Dear students,
We write to lend our voices to those seeking an end to racial injustice in the United States. We fully support and echo the sentiments expressed by President Monaco in his message to the community yesterday.
George Floyd. Nina Pop. Breonna Taylor. Ahmaud Arbery. Tony McDade. These individuals and many more have been lost to violence in just the last few months, including two in the last week alone.
We recognize the disproportionate impact racial injustice has on the Black community of students, staff, faculty, and alumni. We are confronted with the fact that hate and racism are ever present in our society and it is part of our role as a university community to work to change that. We do so through learning, civic engagement, and dialogue within and outside of our home communities.
To this end, we will plan a virtual campus gathering in the near future. This meeting will offer the community a space to express grief, concerns and anger, while also building plans for concrete actions we can all take to recognize and fight racism.
In the meantime, we want to share a variety of resources that are available to you. These are challenging times for all of us. We encourage you to reach out to any of these University resources that may be helpful:
- The University Chaplaincy is open year-round and provides pastoral care and spiritual support. All are welcome to reach out directly to any member of the University Chaplaincy or call 617-627-3427.
- Counseling and Mental Health (CMHS) is open year-round, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Students who are near campus this summer can make a virtual appointment.
- Students can reach both the Counselor-On-Call and the Chaplain-On-Call after hours and over the weekend by calling Public Safety at 617-627-3030.
- Tufts has partnered with two outside resources that provide students with access to licensed therapists from any location via text, live chat, phone, and video: BetterHelp and iHope.
- Students may also seek support through the Dean of Student Affairs Office, which is open Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., or by phone at 617-627-3158.
- Students may also seek support in their individual communities at the Identity-based Centers: Africana Center, FIRST Resource Center, LGBT Center, Latino Center, Women’s Center and Asian American Center.
We encourage you to reach out to any resources that may be helpful to you in the coming days and weeks.
Sincerely yours,
Jianmin Qu
