The Medford/Somerville and Boston SMFA Campuses are open with normal operations.
Please note: Effective January 26, 2021, policies about the suspension of operations due to weather conditions have been updated to reflect the university’s current remote/virtual work environment. Please refer to the university’s Essential Staff, Campus Closings, and Early Release Policies for details.
Weather Closure Procedures
The safety of our community is a top priority.
If a Tufts University campus closes due to snow, it will be announced via the below channels.
- By web at the Tufts University homepage and on http://announcements.tufts.edu
- By email via a message from CampusClosings@tufts.edu
- By Twitter via @TuftsUniversity
- By phone by calling 617-627-INFO (4636) for the Boston and Medford/Somerville campuses; 508-839-6124 for the Grafton campus
If necessary, any additional details about the status of the School of Engineering will be posted on the current page.
For information about preparing for winter storms, please visit the Public Safety website: http://emergency.tufts.edu
If campus is closed or has a delayed opening, faculty members may choose to move in-person classes on-line and notify students about this in time to meet. Should there be a change in modality, students will hear directly from their instructor.
Weather-related changes to the Campus Center building hours will be updated on this page. For openings and hours of dining facilities located in the Campus Center, please check the Dining App, Dining Services' Facebook page, or Twitter feed for up-to-date information.
Counseling and Mental Health
If campus is closed, CMHS staff will be working and holding appointments remotely, even if the building will be closed.
For the updated hours of operation of Tufts COVID-19 testing centers, see the Testing Center Calendar.
When the University closes, Tufts Dining maintains essential services for students on meal plans who reside on the Medford/Somerville campus. Carmichael and Dewick-MacPhie Dining Centers remain open during weather emergencies, and are available for students on meal plans, or students who wish to purchase a meal using JumboCash or Cash.
Beacon Street Residents can use their Rhinobucks at these accepting locations during a campus closure.
When the campus is closed, students in need of medical advice should call (617) 627-3350 to talk to the on-call provider. Students calling with a non-urgent routine matter that can wait until the next business day are encouraged to call back during operating hours or send a message through the patient portal: http://go.tufts.edu/portal.
Weather-related changes to the hours of operation for the Tisch, SMFA and Lilly Libraries will be posted on the Tisch Library homepage.
Weather-related parking bans will be listed on the Public Safety website.
SMFA/NEC Shuttle Service
If the Medford/Somerville and SMFA campuses are closed, shuttles will not operate. All weather-related service announcements will be posted on the Transloc Rider app. The app is available in the iTunes and Google Play stores.
Working during Emergency Closures
When a campus has an emergency closing (such as a snow closure), exempt and non-exempt employees who can work remotely will be expected to perform their regular work remotely unless communicated otherwise by their supervisor. Essential workers will be informed by their supervisor regarding the need to physically report to campus. See the University's Campus Closing Policy for more information.
