Join the School of Engineering on Monday, April 25th at 12:00 PM for a discussion on skill acquisition and career building for today’s more diverse and inclusive workforce with alumni Terence Hosten, Silas C. Nichols, and Silvio Tavares. The colloquium will be moderated by Chris Swan, Dean of Undergraduate Education.

The event will be held in Room 270, Joyce Cummings Center, Medford/Somerville campus. Lunch will be provided to attendees.

About the speakers:

Silas C. Nichols

Silas Nichols

Silas Nichols is the Principal Geotechnical Engineer for the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Infrastructure. Silas is responsible for providing leadership and direction for the FHWA National Geotechnical Team through policy support, technical developments, and coordination with industry and professional groups. Silas has been with the FHWA for more than 20 years both in Headquarters and with the Resource Center. Silas has a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus in geotechnical engineering from Tufts University.  Prior to employment with the FHWA, Silas served more than 10 years in private consulting in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States. 

Silvio Tavares 

Silvio Tavares

As President and CEO of VantageScore, Silvio Tavares leads the company as it continually develops the most predictive, innovative and inclusive credit scoring models in the industry. Before VantageScore, he was Founder, CEO and Chairman of the Digital Commerce Alliance (DCA), a global trade association serving the world’s leading banks, fintech and technology companies. Prior to establishing DCA, Tavares was a senior executive at Visa and at Fiserv\First Data, where he led the data and information products businesses for both companies.

Tavares received his Juris Doctor from Boston University, Master's of Business Administration from Boston College and Bachelor's of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Tufts University. He has invented or co-invented over a dozen patents in financial data analytics.

Terence Hosten 

Terence Hosten

Terence Hosten is the Senior Vice President of Industrial Bank. As a highly experienced Business Executive, he leads diverse international and domestic teams of professionals to new levels of success in a variety of highly competitive industries, cutting-edge markets, and fast-paced environments. He previously served as Director of Strategy and Programs at First Data Corporation; a role that allowed him to provide critical input for the newly developed sales organization. Hosten has also held financial sales executive and management roles at IBM Global Financing, BearingPoint, and Microsoft.

He received a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science from Tufts University and a Master's in Business Administration from Columbia Business School.
