Bridge Professor J.P. de Ruiter has been named fellow of the Association for Psychological Science for “sustained and outstanding contributions to the science of psychology in the areas of research, teaching, service, and/or application.” 

de Ruiter is a cognitive scientist and psycholinguist whose primary research focus is on the cognitive foundations of human communication. His research areas include social robotics, gesture, turn-taking, and ethnostatistics. Tufts' first bridge professor, he holds appointments in both the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Psychology.

Candidates for APS fellowship are considered after 10 years of postdoctoral contribution to the field of psychology. Fellow status is awarded for scientific contributions or the development of research opportunities and settings.
