Fostering global collaboration
The Tufts University School of Engineering looks forward to exploring opportunities for innovation and collaboration with the University of Pavia in Italy – a fellow forward-thinking institution that maintains a global reach while remaining deeply rooted in its local communities.
Francesco Svelto, Rector of the University of Pavia, recently traveled to Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts to deliver the keynote speech at Tufts School of Engineering’s Phase II Commencement ceremony. While Dr. Svelto visited the Medford campus, he and Kyongbum Lee, Karol Family Professor and Dean of Tufts School of Engineering, signed an agreement to continue to grow collaboration between the University of Pavia and Tufts School of Engineering.
In 2022, Tufts Global Education, in conjunction with Tufts University’s School of Engineering and Program of Italian Studies, launched a new summer program in Pavia taught by University of Pavia instructors. In addition to taking courses on the Italian language and in data and computer science, students experienced immersion in Italian culture through excursions in Pavia, Milan, and beyond. The program will continue in 2023, with 25 Tufts students scheduled to travel to Pavia this summer.
During Dr. Svelto’s recent visit to the Tufts campus, he and Dean Lee agreed on the importance of pursuing future cooperative opportunities in research and education. “This agreement strengthens the collaboration between the University of Pavia and Tufts University School of Engineering,” said Rector Svelto. “Together with Dean Lee, we are working to establish a Tufts resident presence in Pavia. This will increase the collaboration between our institutions in research and education and facilitate mobility of professors, post-docs, and PhD students. I am sure our two Universities will broaden their research agreement, including also other disciplines. I wish to thank Dean Lee and all the Faculty for this agreement, which I am particularly proud of.”
“The School of Engineering was honored by Dr. Svelto’s reflective remarks at our recent Commencement ceremony, and we look forward to continuing to foster our relationship with the University of Pavia,” said Dean Lee. “I am particularly excited to work with Rector Svelto and his team to expand opportunities for both our institutions’ students and faculty to innovate on the global stage.”
