Jeffrey Foster named to new ACM Software Engineering Academy
Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science Jeffrey Foster was named a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (SIGSOFT) Software Engineering Academy. SIGSOFT was established in 1976 and focuses on issues related to all aspects of software development and maintenance. SIGSOFT recently established the Software Engineering Academy, a body of honor recognizing distinguished software engineers in the group.
Foster is one of eighty members selected for the first class of honorees. Individuals are chosen based on their lasting contributions to software engineering in research, practice, and education. Each year, new members will be elected to the academy in recognition of their contributions to the foundations of software engineering and its growth. Foster’s election to the inaugural class of the academy demonstrates his prominence in the field of software engineering.
The ACM Special Interest Group on Software Engineering provides a forum for computing professionals from industry, government, and academia to examine principles, practices, and new research results in software engineering. SIGSOFT has several areas of interest, including software architecture, validation, verification, debugging, software safety, software processes, software management, measurement, user interfaces, configuration management, software engineering environments, and more.
Foster is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery. The goal of his research is to develop fundamental new ways to make it easier to build more reliable, and secure software. In addition to software engineering, he has research interests in programming languages and security. At Tufts, he is a leading member of TuPL, a programming languages research group where researchers innovate new ways to think about programming. More specifically, the group conducts research in language design, type systems, program analysis and verification, and compiler optimization, while also applying these techniques to challenges in adjacent areas such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
