Qu receives lifetime achievement award

The NDE Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes outstanding careers in the field of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE), specifically related to NDE for health monitoring and diagnostics and significant contributions to the field. Nominations are submitted from the NDE community and winners are chosen annually by a committee of conference chairs and past award winners.

Dean and Karol Family Professor Jianmin Qu was recognized for his outstanding achievements over 30 years, including co-authoring two books, 12 book chapters, and hundreds of journal articles. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, DARPA, the U.S. Department of Energy, and many other public and private agencies.

Qu is considered a pioneer in the use of nonlinear ultrasonic technologies for NDE of early damage in engineering materials, and receives high praise from his peers. One nominator said, “In my view, Jianmin has been one of the most diligent and innovative researchers in the ultrasonic NDE community over the past two decades.”

Another supporter noted that Qu’s work on ultrasonic waves has led to breakthroughs in modeling and prediction. “For instance, his work on modeling elastic wave properties in waveguides to nondestructively determine the structural integrity of annular structures is well recognized worldwide and highly cited by many researchers and engineers around the world.”

At the SS/NDE Awards on March 26, Qu was honored along with the SPIE Smart Structures and Materials award winner, Dr. Ralph Smith from North Carolina State University.
