Daniel Mitropolsky Joins the Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science welcomes Assistant Professor Daniel Mitropolsky, starting August 1, 2026. 

Prior to Tufts, Mitropolsky was an ICoN Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT in the McGovern Institute for Brain Research and CSAIL. His research focuses on the theoretical computer science of intelligence, both human and artificial. More specifically, he has developed new theories of biologically plausible neural network models and artificial language modeling. He also works in fundamental theoretical computer science more broadly, including complexity theory and foundational cryptography. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical computer science from Columbia University under Christos Papadimitriou and Tal Malkin, and before that, received a B.S. in pure mathematics at Yale. 

Mitropolsky has received multiple awards recognizing his research excellence, including an ICML spotlight paper award, the Columbia Computer Science Davide Giri Memorial Prize and the Andrew P. Kosoresow Memorial Award. Also, one of Mitropolsky's greatest interests is languages—he speaks 13 and is always eager to practice. Passionate about teaching and mentorship, Mitropolsky's excitement for teaching and expertise in computer science will help shape and advance intelligence research at Tufts.
