Associate Professor Yingjie Lao of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who also holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Computer Science, recently received the 2023 Best Associate Editor Award from the IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration Systems (VLSI) journal. Presented by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, this award recognizes Lao’s contributions to editing the journal on topics like trusted AI, hardware security, VLSI architectures for machine learning, emerging cryptographic systems, cybersecurity, and robotics.

Prior to joining Tufts, Lao received his PhD in 2015 from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. After his PhD, he spent one year at Broadcom Corporation, a semiconductor and infrastructure software company, and then joined the faculty at Clemson University. This is not the first time Lao’s work has been recognized with a notable award; during his career, he has received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, an IEEE Circuits and Systems Society VLSI Prize Paper Award, and an ISLPED Best Paper Award.

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is a global professional association dedicated to advancing technology for humanity’s benefit. Its Circuits and Systems Society promotes the development of circuit and system theory, analysis, and design. The society’s journal, IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems, focuses on the design and implementation of microelectronic systems using VLSI/ULSI technologies.
