Omenetto named 2025 R. W. Wood Prize recipient

Frank C. Doble Professor Fiorenzo Omenetto of the Department of Biomedical Engineering has been named the 2025 recipient of Optica’s R.W. Wood Prize, recognizing his groundbreaking work in silk-based optics, photonics, and optoelectronics. His research has led to innovative applications at the intersection of biology and technology, with far-reaching impacts on sustainability, global health, and food safety. Established in 1975 to honor R.W. Wood’s significant contributions to optics, the prize honors discoveries or technical breakthroughs that redefine or significantly advance the field.
Omenetto has pioneered the use of silk as a versatile material platform for advanced technologies in photonics, optoelectronics, and nanotechnology. As a co-inventor on multiple patents in this field, his innovations have been licensed by major corporations. He is also the scientific co-founder of several companies, developing technologies that span from room-temperature vaccines and food preservation to coral reef-safe reflective powders for sunscreen.
"On behalf of the Optica Board, I congratulate the 2025 Optica award and medal recipients,” said Optica President Jim Kafka in a recent press release announcing the 2025 Optica award winners. “Their outstanding work is driving our field forward.”
A distinguished researcher and innovator, Omenetto is the Director of the Silklab at Tufts University. He holds a primary appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, with secondary appointments in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is a J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellow, a Guggenheim Fellow, a Tällberg Foundation Fellow, and a Fellow of several prestigious organizations, including Optica, the National Academy of Inventors, and the American Physical Society. At the 2024 Tufts Annual Inventor Recognition Night, he received the Distinguished Innovator of the Year award. Additionally, Omenetto serves as a special advisor to the provost, contributing his expertise to Tufts' broader academic and research initiatives.
Omenetto’s extensive achievements reflect Optica’s broader mission of advancing the science and application of light. Founded in 1916, Optica serves a global community of scientists, engineers, business professionals, and students, fostering innovation through publications, conferences, and professional development initiatives. As he joins the esteemed group of past Wood Prize recipients, Omenetto continues to shape the future of optical science and technology.
