Remembering Distinguished Professor Flytzani-Stephanopoulos

Maria (Miretta) Flytzani-Stephanopoulos, Robert and Marcy Haber Endowed Professor in Energy Sustainability, passed away on October 28.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the School of Engineering shares the news that Distinguished Professor Maria (Miretta) Flytzani-Stephanopoulos passed away on October 28 after a protracted fight with a very aggressive multiple myeloma.

As the Robert and Marcy Haber Endowed Professor in Energy Sustainability and a Distinguished Professor, Professor Flytzani-Stephanopoulos has had a monumental impact on the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the School of Engineering. She was a brilliant member of the Tufts faculty for 25 years, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. 

A world-renowned expert in the field of catalysis, Professor Flytzani-Stephanopoulos was a co-recipient of the ACS Catalysis Lectureship Award for the Advancement of Catalytic Science in 2019. She brought her passion for transformative research and education to everything that she did. The faculty, staff, students, and alumni whose lives Professor Flytzani-Stephanopoulos touched will miss her tremendously.

The funeral service was held in Greece. An on-campus memorial service for Maria Flytzani-Stephanopoulos will be held on February 10 in the Coolidge Room of Ballou Hall at 4:30 p.m.
