Rife elected Vice President of Institute of Navigation
Professor and Chair Jason Rife of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was recently elected Vice President of the Institute of Navigation (ION). Members of the ION vote annually to elect members to their board. Rife previously served as Finance Chair of the Institute of Navigation and will hold his new position as Vice President for the next two years. The new board appointments were announced at the combined ION International Technical Meeting and Precise Time and Time Interval Systems and Applications meeting in Long Beach, California on January 27.
Rife has been at Tufts since 2007 and has served as department chair since 2020. He is the director of the Automated Systems and Robotics lab, which develops novel control, navigation, and interface technologies that ensure safe, reliable, and seamless interactions between humans and machines. His work focuses on automated transportation including self-driving cars and autonomous aircraft. He earned his PhD from the Stanford University’s Aerospace Robotics Lab, studying animal-tracking applications using underwater robots.
The Institute of Navigation is a non-profit professional society dedicated to advancing the art and science of positioning, navigation and timing. Founded in 1945, it serves a diverse community including those interested in air, space, marine, and land navigation, and position determination. ION’s worldwide membership spans corporations, civil and military government agencies, private scientific and technical institutions, universities and training academies, and consulting firms. It is affiliated with the International Association of Institutes of Navigation.
