Tufts University’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter earned an impressive 2nd place overall at this year’s Northeast Regional American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Student Steel Bridge Competition, hosted at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The annual event challenges student engineers to design, fabricate, and assemble a scale model steel bridge, testing their ability to translate classroom learning into real-world engineering. Roughly two hundred schools compete in the Steel Bridge competition each year across the country. Teams are judged on construction speed, structural efficiency under load, weight, and aesthetics—all with strict spatial and time constraints.

This year, the build team included Cecilia Sweeney, E26; Kaitlin Maloney, E26; Maddy Wood, E28; and Lucas Klein, E28. Team captains were Sweeney; Oakley Winters, E26; and Griffin Davis, E25. Advisors include Professor Masoud Sanayei; Dan Valentine, E95, EG95; Professor of the Practice Brian Brenner, and Part-time Lecturer Ryan Marshall.

The Tufts team outperformed 15 other universities in the Northeast region, placing second behind Université Laval of Canada. Other participating schools included Northeastern University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and the University of New Hampshire, among others.

The strong showing reflects the team’s months of preparation and collaboration, as they spent much of the academic year planning and refining their design to meet both competition requirements and the practicalities of real-world engineering.

The School of Engineering celebrates the team's hard work and looks ahead with anticipation to their continued impact in the field!

About ASCE

Founded on a tradition of scholarship, collaboration, and service, the Tufts Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) strives to enhance the civil engineering community, both on and off-campus. Through site visits, collaboration with the Boston Society of Civil Engineers (BSCES), community outreach, and professional networking opportunities, members gain a greater knowledge and appreciation of what it's like to be a practicing engineer.
