PhD candidate recognized for excellence

At the 2020 American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) annual meeting, mechanical engineering PhD candidate Evan Baker received the Physical Sciences Student Award from the International Space Station (ISS) National Lab Organization for his presentation titled “Co-Si solidification under variable stirring conditions: insights from synchrotron XRD.” He shared research related to Co-Si – a complex alloy system that will be tested in the electromagnetic levitator on the ISS.

The ISS National Laboratory is the unique microgravity laboratory onboard the International Space Station, designated by Congress as a U.S National Laboratory to enable space research access to a wide variety of users. The Laboratory manages all non-NASA research on the space station and its platform is available to U.S. researchers with an interest in using microgravity to solve complex problems.

The ASGSR convenes engineers and scientists to further the fields of gravitational research and physical science research, and to foster physical and biological sciences research and technology both in space and on the ground. Its annual meeting was held virtually in November 2020, featuring a combination of technical talks, keynote speeches, student presentations, and research plenary sessions.
