Biography
Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Simone Nicholson completed her bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University. Though she has industrial engineering experiences in mostly manufacturing private sectors, she was awarded a government fellowship which allowed her to work as a systems engineer in the public sector during the first three years after completion of her bachelor’s degree. During her early STEM career, she realized that she was passionate about the social implications of STEM and decided to pursue a doctoral degree in Engineering and Computing Education at Florida International. Her research is within equity and social justice efforts within STEM education, specifically looking at ways to transform how engineering and computing is taught, learned, and experienced by marginalized STEM students and faculty. Within her advisor’s research group, she focused on “othered” Black students and faculty. She is very excited to embark on this journey at Tufts University! She knows she will have much value added and will learn so much more in the “practice” and applications of STEM education research.
