Department of Computer Science Debuts Two New Artificial Intelligence Minors
The Department of Computer Science is excited to announce two new undergraduate minors focused on artificial intelligence: a Minor in AI Development and a Minor in the Application of AI. While artificial intelligence has been an area of study in computer science for decades, it has become a topic of widespread interest in recent years. The new programs capitalize on the abundance of artificial intelligence expertise at Tufts and offer pathways for students who want to incorporate AI into their future.
The new Minor in AI Development is for students who want to pursue foundational knowledge in AI including upper-level technical courses on how to build new core AI technologies. Open to all undergraduate students in the School of Engineering and School of Arts and Sciences, students who participate in this program will be prepared to move to graduate-level offerings such as the Master’s in Artificial Intelligence.
Students who want to understand how AI works and how to apply AI within a disciplinary context can pursue the Minor in the Application of AI. This minor includes foundational courses in AI and a selection of disciplinary-specific upper-level courses related to AI. The Application of AI Minor is open to AS&E undergraduate students except those earning a degree in computer science, data science or computer engineering.
“AI is transforming how we frame problems and imagine solutions across disciplines,” said Andrew Ramsburg, Associate Professor and Dean of Undergraduate Education in the School of Engineering. “These new minors provide structured pathways for students to gain AI‑related knowledge and skills that will be increasingly important in the years ahead.”
Both programs will train students to critically evaluate these systems' capabilities and limitations, innovate responsibly, and make informed decisions about the ethical implications of AI deployment in their professional and personal lives. Students will go beyond the surface level to build a solid foundation in artificial intelligence, gaining the skills needed to innovate and develop AI technologies effectively and ethically.
