Jayson Pinals, chemical engineering major and biotechnology minor, has received the Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The award recognizes one undergraduate student per student chapter who has attained the highest grade-point average during their freshman and sophomore years of study.

In addition to his excellence in the classroom, Pinals spent the summer researching environmentally friendly alternatives to energy production with Assistant Professor Prashant Deshlahra. As part of the 2020 Tufts Summer Scholars Program, Pinals and Deshlahra investigated ethane-to-ethylene conversion on cobalt molybdate catalyst using carbon dioxide as a soft oxidant.

Pinals currently serves as the vice president of Tufts University’s Chapter of the AIChE. To learn more about the Tufts Student Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, please visit https://sites.tufts.edu/aichetufts/home/.
