Tufts alumnus Christine Beling, E84, recently spoke at the MassRecycle Fall Social and Awards Celebration. Drawing from her experience working at the federal level as a project engineer at the US Environmental Protection Agency, Beling shared insights in waste and materials management.

Beling earned her BS in chemical engineering at Tufts. After graduating, she spent several years as an environmental engineer for the US Department of Energy. In 1995, she transitioned to the Environmental Protection Agency, where she is currently a project engineer. In her role, Beling is the team leader for the Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) program. She provides technical assistance and outreach on SMM priorities to New England state and local governments, businesses, and institutions.

Her work is focused on two main goals: reducing food waste and increasing the national recycling rate. She manages over $9 million in grants for New England stakeholders in a variety of programs including Healthy Communities, Anaerobic Digestion Capacity Building, Pollution Prevention, Brownfields, and, most recently, Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling.

Held at the DCU Center in Worcester, the MassRecycle Fall Social and Awards Celebration brought together municipal representatives, key decision makers from local and state government, recycling industry representatives, and recycling enthusiasts to network and plan for the coming year.
