Professor Qiaobing Xu was recently named co-Editor-in-Chief of WIRES: Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology. He will co-edit the journal alongside Fabiana Quaglia of the University of University of Naples Federico II in Naples, Italy.

Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews (WIRES) is an award-winning online publication that focuses on encyclopedic reference works and review journals. Each WIRES journal centers on an important area of research with a cross-disciplinary lens. The goal is to support the research and teaching needs of advanced students, scientists, healthcare providers, governmental and policy analysts, and other professionals in rapidly developing areas such as climate change, computational statistics, and nanomedicine and nanobiotechnology.

Both nanomedicine and nanobiotechnology combine insights from a breadth of academic disciplines including electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, medicine, materials science, and more. The journal seeks to bring together voices from these disciplines to work towards the advancement of nanotechnology in medicine.

Xu is an active researcher in the nanomedicine and nanobiotechnology spheres. In 2015 he was awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER award for his work on novel drug delivery methods. He is a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors and a member of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. The Tufts Engineering Faculty Research Committee recently selected Xu for the Bright Light award, in recognition of his work in predictive modeling and machine learning.

At Tufts, Xu’s research interests lie at the intersection of material science engineering, nanoscience, and biomedical applications. His work looks at developing new synthetic materials for the delivery of therapeutic biomacromolecules. In addition to his primary appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, he holds secondary appointments in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the School of Medicine. Xu plans to bring his breadth of experience to his new role as co-editor-in-chief.
