PhD candidate Christopher Nguyen receives prestigious optics and photonics scholarship from SPIE.
Christopher Nguyen

Christopher Nguyen, a third-year biomedical engineering PhD student studying in Assistant Professor Srivalleesha Mallidi's iBIT Lab, was awarded a 2021 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

Nguyen received the fellowship in recognition of his potential to contribute to the field of optics and photonics or a related discipline. In the iBIT Lab, he researches quantitative multi-parametric ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging for high-throughput monitoring of burn wounds and tissue engineering applications. Analyzing changes in damaged and healing tissue could lead to stronger understanding of their mechanisms and to more effective treatments.

SPIE is an educational not-for-profit organization first founded in 1955 with the goal of advancing light-based engineering, technology, and science. The Society serves more than 255,000 constituents from 183 countries. In 2021, SPIE awarded $298,000 in education scholarships to 78 exceptional SPIE student members.
