Spotlight on research and collaboration

Nine faculty members in the School of Engineering are working on research projects funded by Tufts in pursuit of the university's strategic research plan. 

In the One Health challenge area, Assistant Professor Amy Pickering of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is part of the Center for Integrated Management of Antimicrobial Resistance (CIMAR), addressing the rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in microbes. Professor David Gute, also of the department, is part of a team working on a "Healthy Aging" research project that focuses on a future with a large aging population.

The Laboratory for Living Devices project, led by Biomedical Engineering Professor Fiorenzo Omenetto, is part of the Living Technology challenge area. This research team includes Professor David Kaplan and Assistant Professor Bree Aldridge from the department, and will focus on building a living devices lab based on naturally derived building blocks for advanced technology.

Assistant Professor Ayse Asatekin and Associate Professor Matthew Panzer in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor of the Practice Eric Hines are part of a Climate & Energy research team that aims to use Tufts' position as a leader in climate policy and education to develop foundations for further study. In the Food & Water Nexus research group, Civil and Environmental Engineering Professors Linda Abriola and Shafiqul Islam will work with colleagues to develop systems-level advancements in natural resource impacts and use, nutrition and health, and governance and policy. These two groups are housed under the Climate, Food, Water & Energy challenge area.

On October 29 in Boston, the groups will present their proposals and discuss future planning for their ideas at A Brighter World Through Research and Scholarship, an event dedicated to Tufts' priority research areas and the future of scholarship at the university.
