The Tufts Summer Scholars Program supports independent research experiences for a handful of undergraduate students each summer. Scholars spend ten weeks working closely with a faculty mentor to pursue a research project of their choosing. Their work culminates in a series of presentations at a poster session in the fall and the Undergraduate Research Symposium in the spring. This summer, seven juniors and seniors in the School of Engineering were selected for the program. This series highlights some of their experiences.

What are you working on this summer?

I am focused on developing co-treatment for Triple Negative Breast Cancer, combining bioelectricity-targeting drugs and chemotherapy to reduce metastatic and invasive potential.

Why did you decide to do the Summer Scholars Program?

I wanted to be part of a diverse group of Tufts students who share a common drive and dedication to solve issues or provide insight to the world through research. It has been a rewarding experience to meet people from many fields and collaborate in workshops.

Who is your faculty mentor? How are they supporting your work?

I am working in Associate Professor Madeleine Oudin’s Lab. Professor Oudin and all the other lab members have been a great support for my research and my career beyond the lab. I have received a lot of guidance strengthening my skills as a researcher and communicator, including applying to conferences and writing research proposals, analyzing data, critically interpreting results, and improving my presentation skills. The amazing work environment and ongoing support in the Oudin Lab motivated me to do my Senior Honors Thesis there this upcoming year.

What has stood out to you the most in your lab experience so far?

The Summer Scholars Program has shaped me as an independent researcher who engages in collaborative work to go above and beyond. Learning from others this summer helped me achieve goals I would not have achieved by myself. I have learned many techniques and tips from experienced researchers in the lab and through Summer Scholar workshops on presentation, research, and writing skills. I have realized how important it is to seek knowledge from others, make the most out of your resources, and engage in insightful conversations with people from other fields who offer distinct perspectives and approaches to problems.

How has your Tufts experience impacted your career goals?

My experience at Tufts in general and with the Summer Scholars Program has enhanced my passion for impactful research. Being surrounded by goal-driven students motivates me to work hard every day to drive change in the world. The people and resources at Tufts have helped me become a better problem-solver, scientist, and teammate, and I am eager to apply these skills in my future career.
