2018 Summer Scholars named

Six rising juniors and eight rising seniors will work on engineering research projects this summer.

Fourteen students will do hands-on research this summer with engineering faculty members, as part of a new cohort of Summer Scholars.

Rising senior and biomedical engineering major Isabel Smokelin will be studying Non-Invasive Optical Imaging for Improved Understanding of Gaucher’s Disease in Tissue Engineered Models with Irene Georgakoudi in Biomedical Engineering.

Rising junior Han Nguyen, who has a double major in biomedical engineering and biology, will be studying High-Purity Enrichment of Disease-Specific Genomes through Selective Cell Lysis with Xiaocheng Jiang in Biomedical Engineering.

Lily Hayes, a rising senior studying biology and architectural studies, will work on Innveration and Cancer with Madeleine Oudin in Biomedical Engineering.

Rising junior Husain Adamji, a chemical engineering major, will study Density Functional Theory based Study of III-V Semiconductors with Prashant Deshlahra in Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Faizan Muhammad, a rising junior in computer science, will be studying Augmented Reality for Collaborative Service Robots with Jivko Sinapov in Computer Science.

Ilya Yurchenko, a rising junior in computer science, will be studying Neuronal Dynamics on Patterned Substrates with Christian Staii in Physics and Astronomy.

Julie Jiang, a rising senior in computer science, will be studying Graph Embedding in Large Scale Networks with Liping Liu in Computer Science.

Emily Sim, a rising senior in computer science, will be studying Impact of a Normatively Charged, High-Risk, Multi-Agent System on a Robot's Norm Learning Process with Matthias Scheutz in Computer Science.

Rising senior and computer science major Manh Duc Nguyen will be studying Learning Word Embeddings via Variational Tensor Factorization with Shuchin Aeron in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Rising senior and computer science major Catherine Cowell will be studying Learning Computer Programming in Early Childhood: The Impact of Speaking a Second Language with Marina Bers in Child Study and Human Development.

Kevin Naranjo, a rising junior in electrical engineering, will work on Performance Analysis of Key Facial Recognition Algorithms with Karen Panetta in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Rising senior Ashish Neupane, an electrical engineering major, will study Magnetic Tracking Vest with Sameer Sonkusale in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering rising senior Martin Majkut will study Highly Deformable Snake-Like Robots Using Soft and Hard Robotic Modules with Rob White in Mechanical Engineering.

Rising junior and sociology major Elizabeth Moison will study Examining the Experiences of Young Girls in STEM Education with Kristen Wendell in the Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO).

Summer Scholars pursue ten-week independent research projects over the summer, and present their research throughout the following academic year.
